About the Sovereign Classification Engine
Purpose
The Sovereign Classification Engine (SCE) is an independent, non-commercial reference platform that provides objective, reproducible classifications for gold sovereign coins minted from 1817 to the present day. It exists to bring transparency and rigour to a field that has historically relied on subjective assessments and inconsistent terminology.
What We Do
The SCE assigns two independent outputs to every coin in its universe:
- Scarcity Rating — a five-band scale from Common to Extreme Rarity, derived from verified production figures (PE) and independent survival evidence (SE).
- Recognition Status — a four-tier classification from Standard Issue to Key Date, determined by documented reference consensus and structural evidence.
These outputs are computed algorithmically under a frozen framework (fv_002), ensuring that classifications are stable, auditable, and free from subjective influence.
What We Are Not
The SCE is not a price guide, valuation service, or investment recommendation platform. We do not buy, sell, or broker coins. Our classifications are based exclusively on numismatic evidence and are independent of market activity.
Methodology
Our classification methodology is fully documented on the Methodology page. The framework is frozen — meaning that thresholds, pathways, and benchmark definitions cannot be altered without a formal governance review process.
Data Sources
The SCE draws on authoritative numismatic references including:
- Official Royal Mint production records
- Marsh's The Gold Sovereign (rarity ratings and survival estimates)
- Spink's Coins of England
- PCGS and NGC population reports
- Published auction records and census data
Governance
The classification framework operates under strict governance controls:
- 9 benchmark coins are permanently locked and validated on every build
- All classification changes require full provenance documentation
- Framework modifications require formal review and version increment
- Complete audit trails are maintained for every classification decision
